What a difference a week makes in speedway as David Howe revived his 2018 season in the most dramatic and impressive of manners to record the most perfect of perfect full 15-point five ride maximums in his career on Saturday against Sheffield to get the grandstand to it's feet on five solid occasions, while Jye Etheridge took a brilliant 14+1 paid maximum - his first in UK speedway!

Ipswich pulled off a good draw at Newcastle just six days previous, and were fired up to do the same or better at Berwick last night, and armed with former Bandit, Ben Barker as a guest for the inured Danny King, their heads were high as Berwick replaced Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen (away on Danish Championship duty) with Glasgow's Paul Starke.

Witches swoop into Shielfield tonight at seven!

The Ipswich Witches materialise tonight in the Borders tonight at 7.00pm on a quest for SGB Championship League points, and have drafted in an ex-Bandit to lead them from the top.

Danny King was involved in a heavy smash a couple of weeks ago with the initial fear of a break being replaced by ligament and soft tissue damage, which was a relief, but has kept the Witches' number out of action and as a result Ben Barker makes a return tonight as a shrewd guest replacement.

Everyone at Berwick Bandits Speedway Club sends their best wishes to Mitchell Davey for a full and speedy recovery from injuries sustained in an accident last night at Birmingham.

Scott Courtney said this morning: “Our thoughts are with Mitch, his family, his closest friends and team mates at the moment. We are pleased to receive some clarification on his condition via his website and although his injuries sound horrific, it’s a relief to hear that he is stable.

The sides rode to a cracking draw just 24 hours earlier, but the Berwick Bandits believed they missed out on a win having been eight up twice in the match, so returned home to Shielfield Park last night to welcome the Workington Comets with the aim of no tripping up and getting that win second time round, but the pre-meeting feeling was it was going to be another close one, and how right that was.

Double encounter with Comets

Tonight at the Workington Comets' Derwent Park, the Berwick "KLS" Bandits (Powered by Mike Hope of Wooler) engage in the first of two SGB Championship Shield group phase matches with the west coast team in two days, the return being at Shielfield Park tomorrow at 7pm.

The sides have, since the Comets' inception back in the early 1970s, "enjoyed" a very active rivalry which has seen some seriously intense racing over the decades, and come 2018 there's no dilution in either side's desire to put one over on their border adversaries.

On one of the biggest nights at Berwick Speedway for a few seasons, 16 of the best Under-21 riders Britain descended on Shielfield Park last night to battle it out over 20 heats a semi and a final to determine the top youngster in the UK this year with Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley the runaway favourites.
