Berwick Bandits Add Two More For 2017

Berwick’s speedway Bandits yesterday announced the names of two more riders signed up to wearing Black and Gold in 2017.
“It is with great pleasure I can announce we are two important steps closer to completing our line-up,” said promoter Scott Courtney, who has been working hard to recruit new blood for the border side alongside his colleagues Gary Havelock and (Scott’s brother) Jamie Courtney.
“We are aiming to track an entertaining, battling  squad of riders in the new SGB Championship, and can confirm we are welcoming France’s 20-year-old Dimitri Berge and 26-year-old Luke Chessell to make their debut as Bandits in what will be our 50th season of speedway.”
Dimitri Berge, who made a match-winning guest appearance for Berwick at Scunthorpe last season, will be a welcome addition to the club, hails from Marmande.  He was the 2012 World Long-track Champion and has represented his nation in the World Team Cup as well as finishing sixth in last season's World Under-21 Championships on 35 points.
His father Phillippe was also a speedway rider and raced for Rybnik in Poland and in Britain for several clubs, notably Oxford and the Isle of Wight during the 1990s.
“Dimitri is a Shielfield Park specialist and joins us with the speedway world at his feet.” said Courtney.
“He has ambition and a never-say-die attitude which promises our fans plenty of spectacular racing when our season starts in spring.”
Luke Chessell, also from a speedway family (his father Mark, and uncles Gary and Martin enjoyed careers in the 80s and 90s) was born in Swindon.
He has raced through the National League – British speedway’s third division – most recently for Rye House and Cradley Heath, and now moves up to the Championship as a Bandit.
“Luke's all-action style and consistently impressive scores in the National League made him one of the most sought after number seven position riders for next year,” said Courtney. “We’re very proud to welcome Luke to the Bandits!
“Dimitri and Luke join our previously-announced trio of Lewis Bridger, Liam Carr and skipper Kevin Doolan as signed-up Berwick Bandits for 2017 --- stay tuned in the near future for the names of our final two team members!”
