A Little Bit Of Everything

Speedway’s on its backside they cry!

At least that is a rough translation of that statement that I can actually type out anyway.

While I don’t entirely agree with that statement, I certainly do feel that Speedway could do with a good kick up said backside.

Stripping our sport back it is basically dirt-tracking, four guys on four bikes doing four laps.

To quote a famous meerkat…”Simples.”

Well not as “simples” as it should be anyway. Our sport is a simple sport made overly complicated by its own rules.

Trying to explain averages, doubling up and doubling down to a casual fan or newcomer is a virtual impossibility, and to be honest these people probably don’t care if Nick Morris has a 9.87 average and Jye Etheridge has a 4.25 point average, they just want to see a good race and be entertained.

Ultimately that is why we all go to speedway, to be entertained.

Now I don’t want to bury myself in about the rules or regulations that make our sport overly complicated, I’m almost certain I have done that before and perhaps that is a topic of discussion for another day.

Having watched the latest televised meeting between Leicester and Swindon on BT Sport on Monday night, and been thoroughly entertained I might add, it got me thinking about what people want to see when they part with their money at the turnstiles.

I don’t think anyone could complain about being short changed at that meeting, it had absolutely everything.

Controversy, close and exciting racing, crashes and a last heat decider, what more could you ask for?

Now before the “fun police” get all “radio rental”, nobody wants to see crashes where people get hurt, but we all know that this speedway game is tough and sadly that is part and parcel of our sport.

I obviously pass on my best wishes to all the lads who were hurt in what could only be described as a bruising encounter.

You couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the Leicester side, already operating rider replacement for Josh Bates, only to lose Kyle Newman with a suspected arm injury in the first heat and then their new marquee signing Pawel Predpelski to a leg injury following an alarming looking crash.

Despite being down to just four fit riders they somehow battled on to be leading heading into heat 15, only for Swindon to take a 5-1 and steal away the win.

It was one of those meetings where in truth, neither side deserved to take nothing from the meeting but sadly the Lions just fell short despite throwing everything they had at the Robins.

I realise that being a Bandits fan, that type of statement may be all too familiar this season as the Lions currently find themselves in a position not too dissimilar to us, but again much like us, they refuse to throw the towel in.

Both the Robins and the Lions put on a show to entertain us and in terms of excitement and pure sporting drama this meeting was right up there with the classics.

While the Lions may have lost, the real winners were the fans either watching at home or there in the thick of the action, as it was one of those meetings that was pure entertainment from start to finish.

I think it showcased exactly how exciting this sport can be when everything falls into place and we witness a great night of racing, speedway is without doubt the best and most exciting sport anywhere on the planet.

Of course if you wish to agree, or disagree with the Mythman, have an idea for a feature, or you simply want to chew the fat over all things speedway, you can email me Mythman666@hotmail.com. If your compliments, or indeed, gripes can be contained to just 120 characters, you can send me a tweet @Mythman666.

Until next time…and there will be a next time.
