COLOUR ME IMPRESSED

Colour me impressed.

Shielfield Park looked superb on Saturday.

The occasion was, as many will be aware, the Press Launch and official practice for both the Bullets and our NJL Academy squad and it was great to see the coverage, scrutinise the pictures from the lenses of Taz, Keith and Lanno, check everything and everyone out.

The timing of the launch was excellent, stealing a march – and social media headlines – from the other NDL member-clubs, gaining coverage that’ll ensure as many people as possible are aware of the Bullets having joined the Bandits as representing the border country in speedway.

Their opening match – less than four weeks away now – will, while only streamed from a closed-door setting, be not only the first meeting of the long-awaited new UK season but the first official team meeting in Britain for fully eighteen months.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m thinking this indicates there will be a very healthy take-up of the offered internet streaming of the Bullets in action for the very first time, come May 1st……..

I’m sure there will be more than just a few geeks and nerds tuning in for this one.

I think being described as a geek is better than being a nerd. Nerd sounds really uncool, geek suggests shy genius.

But back to Saturday’s show, laid on for the media. The new track’s bedded in well, the grass is a lush green with no footy for most of the winter months and the fence is looking as smart and safe as ever.

When the sun’s shining on the Ducket our favourite raceyard can really look mighty fine.

I would say that this has been true as far as living memory goes, but the phrase “in living memory” is a strange one – how far back is that, exactly?

In my case, my “living memory” sometimes only reaches last Thursday, but otherwise I think I’m still doing OK.

Old codgerism gets a bad rap but trust me, having been here, there and everywhere and done it all – there are many advantages to letting young folk eagerly look after your every need.

They seem to think that if you live to be sixty-odd and can still eat a boiled egg, you deserve a Nobel Prize…………

Another benefit of having been born away back in the twentieth century is that last week I was awarded a second prick.

Thus, I’m now fully vaccinated against the nasty coronapox and – while still obeying all Nicola’s laws and restrictions – I do feel much-more bulletproof.

As I write, with Boris suggesting we’ll need vaccine passports to travel about – to the pub, as much as Puerto de la Cruz – I really don’t know what restrictions will be laid down regarding a full-on return to the terraces, but with our arms brimful of AstraZeneca and Pfizer’s finest products, why not?

It’s been a long time a-coming, but with the Bullets and Academy teams on parade at the weekend, a similar show coming up next month for the big-time Banditos and a promotion which appears to be ahead of the game on just about every front, I’m feeling pretty good about 2021.

Having a second prick fairly boosts the old optimism!
