IT’S JUST GOING ON AND ON

It just goes on and on……

I think the current lack of a distinct light at the end of the Covid19 tunnel is the most-depressing thing.

If it can affect — and infect — the Prime Minister, who among us can feel any too safe?

Those of us who are (literally) trapped within our homes by governmental edict can be glad that self-isolation may be saving us from infection, but after three weeks and no company, cabin fever is influencing everything we think or do.

The pandemic is bigger than speedway of course – not much, but definitely bigger. So, until further notice, we ain’t gonna see any live skidding.

What we are getting, and can see is speedway online, on our phones, on our tablets and computers, with some of the more go-ahead clubs presenting regular racing from their libraries.

So far, over the past ten days I’ve watched the Bandits up at Armadale in two last-heat deciders (from 1997 and 2019) and – on our own YouTube channel — our home match against the Tigs at the start of 2018. All good stuff.

The meeting shown tonight from Belle Vue, with Poole staging a miracle recovery, produced some incredible racing over the final few races.

Moving on, my last week’s weblog discussed – and invited opinion – on who might be the bestest Banditos of the past fifty-odd years. As ever, there has been a response, as ever not all of it in agreement with your writer.

A number of seven-man line-ups have been submitted – each differing in some way from my own suggestion – but all including the names of Wayne Brown and Michal Makovsky, who appear to be everyone’s favourite choices.

Of the guys I didn’t name, you have insisted I should have considered Paul Clews, Rob Woffinden, Pepe Franc, Kozza Smith and Ricky Ashworth – fair enough, and if anyone else wants to chip in their tuppenceworth, the last blog’s obviously available on here to re-read and appraise. The e-mail address is at the foot of this page.

On that matter, can I also highlight that, for those of us who are confined to barracks for the duration, there is a library on the website of nearly five hundred past blogs – not only my feeble efforts, but great columns by the Mighty Mythman, King Kevin Doolan, Doddering George and Scintillating Sarah – for you to read again, and keep you smiling, thinking or complaining during your period of house arrest?

Sarah, by the way, is a hero – an NHS full-timer, working away on the front line in these crucial days. This will (partly) excuse her failure to deliver a weekly blog just now. Although when she tells us her spare time is mostly being spent watching sweaty wrestlers grappling with one another’s body parts, we’re not too sure……..
