The rumour mill has been swirling, will we see racing in 2020?
The question remains unanswered at the time of writing but it does seem somewhat more of a possibility now than it did not so long ago.
Let’s just say the answer is yes and we do see some competitive racing in 2020, what format do we go with?
With the obvious omission of Glasgow a full league format is likely out of the question and of course there is the time. or lack thereof to factor in too.
So what to do?
Challenge matches? Glorified practice?
While these sorts of things traditionally take place to open a season, it has been proven that they don’t tend to be a crowd puller during the season for whatever reason.
As a one off these can be decent crowd pullers but as a weekly occurrence, not so much, and I don’t know about you, but outside of the World Championship, I much prefer team racing.
Thinking outside the box?
Now there’s an idea…
In an ideal world perhaps a league split into two sections would have been a good shout, however with the aforementioned omission of Glasgow it leaves us an odd number of teams. That is of course unless anyone else decides they aren’t running, which at this point remains a possibility.
So what to do?
Well it isn’t up to me of course, but filling in column inches by typing a load of bollocks has become somewhat of a specialty in recent months, so why stop now?
So lets assume that the Championship will start with 11 teams, arguably the most awkward number for splitting anything up…however it isn’t totally impossible.
To me what would be virtually impossible would be trying to squeeze in home and away meetings against ten other teams before the end of October, so a split seems logical.
Either split it into a six and a five, north and south and race everyone home and away once and this will also allow space in the calendar for the inevitable rain offs and any additional meetings that promotions may wish to run.
Winners north and south can be declared and if desired a final between the top two sides can be contested.
Would it work? I honestly don’t know but surely something like this has to happen if we are to see any competitive action in 2020.
Truth be told, I personally had written off the chances of seeing live action in 2020 purely so it would be a bonus if it did actually happen.
Do I want it to happen? Of course.
Do I think it’ll happen? At the moment the jury is out.
However, let’s say it is given the green light and we can commence racing in some form, I can guarantee you that speedway fans up and down the country will for the most part behave in an exemplary manner…not like these reprobates who couldn’t behave themselves once the pubs reopened.
For me there are two trains of thought in terms of a possible 2020 season…
If it is going to start, it has to start very very soon with a clear format in place. The other side of the coin is to write it off for 2020 altogether and we reconvene in 2021.
Either way I will be fully on board when the racing does get underway and I do hope it’s sooner rather than later, if for no other reason that it is easier to find subject matter when there is actually something happening.
Of course if you wish to agree, or disagree with the Mythman, have an idea for a feature, or you simply want to chew the fat over all things speedway, you can email me email@example.com or get in touch via the JB Speedway Media Facebook page. If your compliments, or indeed gripes can be contained to limited characters, you can send me a tweet @Mythman666.
Until next time…and there will be a next time.
