REALLY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

GHT Bullets team announced a while ago – check.

FTS Bandits completed earlier this month – check.

Now the really important announcements are also emerging – the ones which mean we can afford to go racing in April…….

This week alone has seen the club proudly publicising the return of sponsors Walter Cochrane – who does great plastering and roofing – and Fabvent of Spittal (fabrication and ventilation) both organisations well-known as good friends to our speedway in the past, too.

They join main team sponsors FTS and GHT, our “powered by” Bandit-backers Keenwood Karpets and other familiar names such as Simpson’s Malt and Strive Digital – to name just a couple – and believe me, every sponsorship the club signs up is vital to the continuation, let alone success, of our speedway.

Let’s face it, to run speedway at Shielfield the club has to set a strict budget. It is only the additional financial input, over and above straightforward turnstile takings, programme sales and catering revenue on race-nights, that permits the recruitment to the cause in 2022 of riders such as Bomber Harris and Ricky Wells.

The 5-1 Draw continues to feed our funds – are you involved, and if not, why not? – but the main outside source of income support for our speedway is sponsorship.

There are various levels of backing available to interested parties, and the regular return to the cause each spring of so many financial friends surely proves these deals are a two-way street, and being seen around the area as an organisation which helps keep the tyres turning is a handy way of attracting business.

Moving on, as we count the days until opening night (currently forty-two) I’ll report having had a quiet winter – again – with pandemic travel restrictions meaning no chance of any warmer-weather speedway adventures to Australia, America, Argentina or anyplace else beginning with “A”, and nowt else to do except sit at home, shivering…….

I thought about improving my winter wellbeing by boosting my intake of healthy food – I was delighted by a well-filled t-shirt I saw, proclaiming “I’m a Vegan from my head tomatoes” – but when I tried a vegetarian diet, it didn’t go well.

It’s not that the bottom fell out of my world. The exact opposite, in fact.

So not for me. Back to Andersons’ Quality Butchers (another club sponsor, I believe) for a few steak pies, and all was well again.

Plus the odd snootful of wine with my meals. Wine is essential for our survival. Dinosaurs didn’t have wine and look what happened to them…….

However, here we are, over the hump of winter and coasting back down hill to a sunny springtime.

Can one of the Berwick-based teams really bring home any bacon in the season to come?

At this point in the year, everyone has that dream. Follow the rules, and win the jackpot.
