Special guest to make 5-1 Draw

It’s time for one lucky speedway supporter to end the night £500 richer – and we’ve enlisted a special guest to choose May’s winner.

The Bandits’ 5-1 Draw will be made during the interval of Saturday’s Championship blockbuster against Glasgow Tigers by 14-year-old Natalie Young who will be attending the meeting with mum, Jess.

They have travelled up from their home in Surrey and will be watching alongside long-time friend and lifelong Berwick Speedway fan Lesley Redpath.

It is part of Jess’s “Make memories before goodbyes” tour as, tragically the 34-year-old has suffered a relapse of an aggressive form of leukaemia having previously been in remission after battling the disease a couple of years ago.

Jess announced her decision to undergo only palliative care on social media during

winter which prompted long-time friend and Kent Royals’ promoter Si Kellow to launch a Gofundme page for the pair.

He explained: “Natalie has been wonderful in helping her mum get through her illness but Jessica would like to have as many happy memories as possible with Natalie in the time she has left; memories that are better than being ‘mum’s looker afterer’ and will give Natalie something to remember her Mum in a happier way.”

Lesley said: “I can’t remember exactly where – but I know it was watching speedway somewhere – that I first met Jess but over the last 20 years we have become good friends.

“I was so happy when she went into remission a couple of years ago and it was terrible when she told us that the horrible disease had returned and that palliative care was the only real option.

“Despite now needing a wheelchair to get around Jess is determined to take Jess to as many tracks as possible and the chance of seeing Glasgow at Berwick was too good to miss.

“The Berwick management have been very supportive in making it a visit to remember for Jess and Nat and Supporters’ Club chairman Norman Clark asked if they would make the 5-1 Draw – which is something a little different.”

With a £500 first prize and further prizes of £100 and £50 the 5-1 Draw has raised vital funds for the Stadium Track and Rent Support (S.T.A.R.S.) Project since the club launched it near the end of the 2019 season.

Costing £10 per number, per month, the scheme is administered on the club’s behalf by the Berwick Speedway Supporters’ Club who can also be contacted by anyone wishing to join. Either email normski180@sky.com or text 07519856702.
