An old favourite involving the Cab Direct Championship new boys will get the 2024 speedway season in the Borders off to a spectacular start.

For the first time since they swept the board in 2018 Workington Comets are racing in British speedway’s second tier and they will be the first opponents for the Bandits in the resurrected Border Trophy with the first leg at Shielfield Park on 30 March and the trophy – a traditional season opener in the 1970s and 80s – decided at Northside the following afternoon.

Then it’s straight into the BSN Series action as former skippers Leon Flint and Chris Harris return to the Borders with the Glasgow Tigers. Edinburgh complete the Scottish section of the Series with the three group winners and highest scoring second placed team progressing through to the semi-finals.

In the Knockout Cup the Bandits will face the winner of the first round tie between holders Scunthorpe and Plymouth which is scheduled to be raced over the weekend of 12/13 April. Berwick’s leg of the quarter-final is scheduled for 20 April with provisional second leg fixtures included in the list at Plymouth (28 April) or Scunthorpe (17 May).

The decision to stage this year’s British Final on 8 June takes one Saturday out of the fixture equation as does another Belle Vue prime event, the Speedway of Nations Final on 13 July and the British Grand Prix at Cardiff on 17 August.

The annual BEN Fund meeting takes place at Workington on 16 March, Oxford will again host the Championship Pairs on the eve of the British GP and Redcar stages the Championship Riders’ event on a date to be confirmed.

Shielfield will stage a leg of the new development competition for National Development League riders with the exact format of the event and date to be confirmed.

With Rory Schlein, Drew Kemp, Danyon Hume, and Lewis Kerr already announced the Bandits’ line-up is taking shape and the aim of team manager Stewart Dickson is very much to progress in both knockout competitions and secure a top four position and qualify for the play-offs.
