Perfect night for Ricky’s return

Until the tumultuous events of the two closing heats there was no question what prompted the biggest cheer of the night at Shielfield Park on Saturday.

Ricky Ashworth’s first visit to these parts for over six years saw him the centre of attention with fans and friends queuing up to wish him well.

Former club owner John Anderson invited his most popular signing to join him in the hospitality box for the night.

With dad, Dave

No question that the visit of Redcar was right up Ricky’s street, and he would have been leading from the front as the drama unfolded heat by heat.

And he would have relished the grand finale with Leon Flint, who Ricky became a mentor and inspiration to in his youth racing days, fittingly the man of the moment.

Indeed, there was something Ashworth-esque in how Leon helped Connor Coles steer the FTS Bandits within sight of the finishing line in heat 14 and then fended off the attention of Charles Wright in the last race of the night to bag the points.

In true Ricky Ashworth style – getting the job done when it matters most.

To the delight of the man himself.

“It was a great meeting and I’ve had a fantastic time meeting old friends,” he said afterwards.

“I love Berwick and hope to get back up before the end of the season.”

And even the infamously fickle Borders’ weather played ball.

“That’s probably the warmest I’ve ever been at Berwick,” Ricky laughed. “It was nice enough to sit outside and have a beer with everyone!”
