Lewis Kerr will undergo a fitness test tonight (Wednesday) before the Jewson Bandits, powered by Keenwood Karpets, finalise their team for this weekend.
Kerr has been sidelined since fracturing his ankle during Oxford Spires’ Premiership defeat at the hands of Ipswich on April 11.
He had the cast taken off the ankle ten days ago and has been undergoing oxygen chamber treatment in addition to physiotherapy, running and gym work in an effort to return to action.
But the acid test will happen later tonight when, following the Cheetahs’ Cab Direct Championship match with Redcar (live on BSN) Lewis will undertake a practice session under the watchful eye of Berwick co-owner and Oxford promoter Jamie Courtney.
If successful then Kerr will return to the Berwick side which defends an 18-point lead in its Cab Direct Knockout Cup quarterfinal at Scunthorpe on Friday night and the following evening’s league match against Plymouth at Shielfield Park.
Berwick have guests on stand-by should Kerr suffer a reaction to the injury.
Saturday’s visitors Plymouth have also yet to finalise their seven. Their dispensation to cover Nico Covatti – injured in an Argentinean track crash days after his signing was announced by the Gladiators – ran out this week.
As a result they can only replace him with a guest up to 75% of his average (7.82) leaving them with 5.685 to play with. Edinburgh’s Paco Castagna guested for the Gladiators in their home defeat against Workington on Tuesday night but with the Monarchs due to race in Northside on Saturday afternoon their options are limited.
